What is a Brake Lining?

A brake lining is a component that slows down a vehicle by creating friction against the brake disc or drum when the brake pedal is pressed. Regular maintenance and timely replacement of brake linings are crucial for the optimal performance of the brake system and the longevity of the vehicle.

The Role of the Brake Lining Plate

The brake lining plate is a critical foundation within the brake lining. It holds the brake lining in place on the brake caliper and helps dissipate heat to other components of the brake system. To minimize noise during braking, many brake linings are equipped with reverse side damping features such as springs, foils, sheet steel, and specialized paint.

When the brake system is activated—meaning when the brake pedal is pressed—the brake lining plate is pressed between the brake lining and the brake disc. A very thin adhesive layer, only a few micrometers thick, is situated between the brake lining plate and the substrate. This adhesive layer serves as a safety boundary, ensuring proper interaction between the friction materials and the plate.
